Throughout my career, I’ve been passionate about designing programs that create lasting change and foster resilience, particularly in healthcare and family dynamics. With over 30 years of experience, I’ve specialized in supporting diverse populations, including coaching professionals on communication, professionalism, and patient-family-centered care. My work focuses on building empathetic, meaningful interactions between people and helping to bridge gaps in understanding and support.
One of my proudest achievements is the creation of an innovative program supporting children affected by separation and divorce. Drawing from my expertise as a licensed social worker, therapist, and certified coach in navigating difficult conversations, I co-authored a curriculum that equips children with tools to manage conflict, build resilience, and maintain healthy relationships with both parents. This program is grounded in the belief that children, when provided a supportive environment, can emerge stronger and more emotionally secure despite their challenges. In addition to this curriculum, I’ve collaborated on developing medical school curricula guiding students through Professional Identity Formation (PIF), embedding professionalism and cultural sensitivity into their training. I’ve also created and implemented patient-centered healthcare initiatives like the nationally recognized “Take a Break” program that improves the patient-family experience.
Whether working with children, families, or the healthcare community, my goal remains the same: to foster strong relationships and empower individuals to navigate complex emotional and relational landscapes.
I have been a family science practitioner providing parenting and family education and training for more than 40 years. I have my own consulting company, Taner Associates that works with individuals, schools and agencies, and various national organizations.
My varied professional experiences with dynamic colleagues when training, editing and evaluating many family science programs lead me to my collaboration in developing the “Strengthening Children’s Program – SCP”. This six session program for schools and agencies serving youth in grades 3-5 or 6-8 whose families are experiencing divorce or separation received immensely positive feedback. The facilitators, the sponsors and most importantly, the youth who participated in the programs’ pilots were instrumental in our decision to take this program nation-wide.
My dedication to SCP comes from my years of overseeing SUD treatment funds in a NJ county with over 800,00 residents. When people called asking for support, our staff inquired, “How old were you when you started using substances?” The typical replies were, “When I was 10, (or thereabouts)”. When asked, “What was going on?”, we heard, “My parents were getting divorced”. SCP seeks to prevent self-medication and other high-risk behaviors by youth and increase parent awareness of the challenges faced by the children so that all can achieve a successful transition in their family.
